The Benefits of Scheduling Annual Doctor Appointments

Apr 18, 2024

Most people don't get excited at the thought of visiting the doctor. That's okay, and it's actually pretty normal. But just because you don't get excited about visiting the doctor doesn't mean that you should avoid those annual checkups. According to onlinedoctor.com, 78% of people 54 and older visited the doctor last year. People are setting a priority on preventive health care so that they can avoid the more expensive types of healthcare that come with letting conditions get out of control. Let's look at a few good reasons why you should schedule annual doctor appointments.

Update Your Medical History

Every time you visit the doctor, your medical history is updated. These updates are important because your primary care physician uses your medical history to help assess your risks of chronic or genetically based diseases. When new information pops up during the year, it needs to go on your medical chart so that your doctor always has the most accurate information available to assist you with.

Ask Questions

Your annual doctor appointments are a great time for you to ask questions about your health. If things have been changing, or you have concerns, this is the time to discuss them. Searching the internet for information when you're concerned about something will only take you so far. It's best to talk with your personal doctor about your health.

Receive Your Physical Exam

This is also when you'll receive your annual physical exam. During your exam, your doctor will be able to properly assess your current health and identify any potential problems. Usually, during a physical exam, your eyes, ears, abdomen, nervous system, skin, lungs, and heart will be examined. Your weight will also be taken. If necessary, other tests can be performed as well, such as electrocardiograms, which track your heartbeat.

Get Immunizations

If you need any type of immunization, you'll also receive these during your checkup. This can be an important part of your overall health and well-being. Be sure you are staying up to date with your required vaccines.

Undergo Blood Tests

If necessary, you might also undergo blood tests during your doctor appointments. These blood tests can help to identify conditions such as diabetes, liver and kidney problems, vitamin deficiencies, high cholesterol, and other conditions. Catching these conditions early makes it possible to start treatment or make lifestyle changes that can help.

These are just a few reasons why you should stay up to date on your annual doctor appointments. If you need to schedule an appointment, please contact us at Ajitpal S. Tiwana MD today.
